Damen Naval Contracts Dutch Firm for ASW Frigate Fuel Oil Separators
Damen Naval has contracted Alfa Laval Benelux to deliver fuel oil separators for the Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) frigates of the Royal Netherlands Navy and Belgian Navy.
Under the contract, Breda-based Alfa Laval Benelux will deliver fuel oil separators, cleaning tables, the Oily Bilge Water Separators, and ILS (integrated logistics support) deliverables.
Damen was contracted in June 2023 to design and build a pair of ASW frigates each for both the navies as replacements for the current Karel Doorman Class of multipurpose frigates.
In September, the Dutch government announced plans to order additional frigates.
“This project is unique because we are building identical frigates for two different NATO partners,” Damen Naval Director of Corporate Strategy & Innovation Richard Keulen said.
“Projects such as these are crucial for the Dutch naval shipbuilding industry, and we want to make sure to involve as many Dutch suppliers as possible.”
Alfa will deliver skid-built fuel oil separators capable of handling various types of fuel.
A fuel oil separator or purifier removes solids and water from fuel oil, enhancing its efficiency and protecting equipment.
Also included in the contract is Oily Bilge Water Separators (PureBilge), a fully automated centrifugal separation system that cleans oily water on board vessels.
The system is capable of removing oil pollution of 5 PPM (Parts Per Million).
It will also be skid-built complete, featuring interconnecting pipes and electrical cabling.
“We are excited and looking forward to starting this project with strict demands in shock and noise levels with Damen Naval and extending our successful corporation,” Head of Marine Division Benelux David van Luijtelaar said.
