Weld County oil spills for May 23

Information is based on Form 19, which operators must fill out detailing the leakage/spill events. Any spill release that may impact waters of the state must be reported as soon as practical. Spills and leaks typically are found during routine maintenance on existing wells, though some actual "spills" do occur among the 17,000-plus wells in the county.

» NOBLE ENERGY INC reported May 19 a historical flowline release near Weld County Road 62 and 59, about 5 miles southeast of Gill. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Lab analysis indicated a historical release at the decommissioned flowline. One soil sample exceeded COGCC standards for benzo(a)anthracene. This location lies within an Aquatic Native Species Conservations Waters high-priority habitat.

» NOBLE ENERGY INC reported May 19 a historical well spill near Weld 47 and 34 1/2, about 16 miles east of Platteville. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Lab analysis indicated a historical release at the decommissioned wellhead. One soil sample exceeded COGCC standards for naphthalene, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene, 1- methylnaphthalene and 2-methylnaphthalene.

» NOBLE ENERGY INC reported May 18 a historical tank battery spill near Weld 47 and 40, about 18 miles east of Platteville. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Lab analysis indicated a historical release at the decommissed tank battery. One groundwater sample exceeded COGCC standards for benzene, 1,2,4-triemthylbenzene and 1,3,5- triemthylbenzene. Another soil sample exceeded COGCC standards for 1,2,4-triemthylbenzene, 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene, 1-methylnaphthalene and 2-methylnaphthalene. This location lies within a Bald Eagle Roost site.

» KERR MCGEE OIL & GAS ONSHORE LP reported May 17 a recent tank battery spill near Weld 36 and 33, about 5 miles southeast of Gilcrest. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. An operator responded to a high tank reading when the release was found. Approximately 0.6 barrels of fluid were released within the secondary containment from the produced water vessel. During cleanup, the release became state reportable because of the quantity of impacted soil removed from the release area. Assessment and cleanup are ongoing.

» NOBLE ENERGY INC reported May 17 a historical tank battery spill near Weld 44 and 37, about 2 miles east of Peckham. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Lab analysis indicated a historical release at the decommissioned tank battery. One soil sample exceeded COGCC standards for total petroleum hydrocarbons, 1-methylnaphthalene and 2-methylnaphthalene.

» NOBLE ENERGY INC reported May 17 a recent tank battery spill near Weld 47 and 46, about 6 miles southeast of LaSalle. Between 5 and 100 barrels of produced water spilled. Rainwater filed the lined containment at the tank battery, which overtopped the produced water vault that contained 50 barrels of produced water. The location was shut in and a vac truck was dispatched to remove fluid from the containment. After the fluid was removed, there was no oil or sheen visible on the water surface or in the containment.

» NOBLE ENERGY INC reported May 17 a recent tank battery spill near Weld 47 and 46, about 6 miles southeast of LaSalle. Between 5 and 100 barrels of produced water spilled. Rainwater filled the lined containment at the tank battery, which overtopped a produced water vault that contained 29 barrels of produced water. The location was shut in and a vac truck was dispatched to remove fluid from the containment. There was no oil or sheen visible on the water surface or in the containment.

» KERR MCGEE OIL & GAS ONSHORE LP reported May 15 a historical tank battery spill near Weld 39 and 28, about 5 miles southeast of Platteville. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Historically impacted soil was found near the separator during tank battery removal at the facility. Assessment is ongoing.

» NOBLE ENERGY INC reported May 15 a historical well spill near Colo. 392 and Weld 45 in Lucerne. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Lab analysis indicated a historical release at the decommissioned wellhead. One soil sample exceeded COGCC standards for naphthalene, soil adsorption ratio and potential hydrogen.

» NOBLE ENERGY INC reported May 15 a recent tank battery spill near Weld 47 and 46, about 6 miles southeast of LaSalle. Between 5 and 100 barrels of produced water spilled. Rainwater filled the lined containment at the tank battery. The produced water vault, containing 12.45 barrels of produced water, overtopped. The location has been shut in and a vac truck was scheduled to bottom out the containment. There was no oil or sheen visible on the water surface.

» KERR MCGEE OIL & GAS ONSHORE LP reported May 11 a historical tank battery spill near U.S. 85 and Weld 16 in Fort Lupton. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Historically impacted soil was found adjacent to an above-ground storage tank during tank battery removal. The volume of the release is unknown. Assessment is ongoing.

» KERR MCGEE OIL & GAS ONSHORE LP reported May 11 a historical well spill near Weld 39 and 38, about 7 miles southeast of Gilcrest. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Historically impacted soil was found following cut and cap at the wellhead. Excavation and assessment are ongoing.

» CRESTONE PEAK RESOURCES OPERATING LLC reported May 11 a historical well spill near Weld 39 and 32, about 7 miles east of Platteville. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Historical impacts were found during facility decommissioning at the separator. Impacted soil will be removed and hauled to a certified disposal facility. Confirmation soil samples will be collected and submitted for laboratory analysis.

An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Historically impacted soil was found following decommissioning. Excavation and assessment are ongoing.
