When you’re dealing with dark spots, breakouts, or uneven texture, sometimes a basic three-step skin care routine (cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF) just won't cut it. Enter concentrated, targeted treatments, which can take your regimen to the next level. As you likely know from your Tiktok FYP and those creepily on-the-nose Instagram ads, there are a ton of serums, masks, toners, and oils to choose from, each promising to fix one thing or prevent another.
To help you narrow down the options—and figure out which ones are truly best for you—our 45 testers tried and reviewed dozens of new products for the 2023 SELF Healthy Beauty Awards. As a result, we’ve got recommendations for a plethora of skin types and needs: brightening serums, soothing oils, hydrating masks, and more goodies from brands you know and love—plus some you don't (but really should). If you’re looking for a delightful and effective routine, we suggest reaching for these.

Sometimes less really is more. This no-frills hyaluronic acid serum from Kiehl's has a short list of ingredients and still earned high praise from our testers, thanks to the way it targeted dehydration and lackluster skin. It has an ultra-lightweight feel that soaks in quickly, so you can apply it and go—or blast through the rest of your skin care routine afterward.
Bonus points, per the experts: It also contains glycerin, a good moisturizing ingredient for all skin types.
One tester said: "Because of my dry, sensitive skin, locking in moisture is important, and this product definitely helped. I was worried I would experience some tingling since I have eczema on my face, but it didn't have any negative effects, which was great."

If your go-to a.m. and p.m. creams aren't giving you enough hydration, tack on a serum like this one from Ourself. It has a light, fast-absorbing consistency and relies on two forms of hyaluronic acid to make skin as juicy and plump as a summer peach.
Bonus points, per the experts: Here you’ll find peptides, which are excellent for targeting signs of aging; niacinamide for evening skin tone and soothing redness; and vitamin C, an antioxidant that brightens dark spots over time.
One tester said: "This is by and large the best product I have tried all year—within two weeks of using it (and changing nothing but that in my skin care routine) I received constant compliments from friends, strangers, colleagues, random people in Zoom meetings…. It was truly wild. I couldn't believe it, but it looked like I had gotten botox or filler. This serum hydrates, brightens, evens, and smooths, and it's the only expensive skin care product I would actually purchase with my own money."

You know when you pop a pimple—or worse, go on a little popping spree—and are left with an angry dark spot to remind you what you’ve done? That's when you want a brightening serum in your regimen. This one is formulated with a potent combination of antioxidants and came highly recommended by our testers.
Bonus points, per the experts: Niacinamide is an antioxidant that helps to brighten, soothe redness, and increase hydration, and azelaic acid can be a good acne-fighting chemical exfoliant for all skin types, including sensitive skin.
One tester said: "The pump is a great way to dispense the serum and the refillable glass bottle keeps the product looking sharp on your bathroom counter. But the most interesting thing about this product, to me, is the consistency: It's a little more watery and sticky than its competitors, which actually works better. It dries quickly and allows me to apply moisturizer without a long wait in between—and without too much product buildup. Overall, it helps make my skin look more even, and leaves me with a fresh and clean-feeling face."
Courtesy of Current State
Let this winner from new brand Current State serve as a reminder that you don't need to shell out big bucks to get effective skin care. Here, retinol, marula oil, and jojoba oil combat dryness—and it comes in a cute, squat $22 package.
Bonus points, per the experts: This product contains moisturizing squalane; aloe, which is calming and hydrating; and oat, which soothes sensitive skin.
One tester said: "I’ve tried many serums, and I can say with confidence that this is the only one where I’ve seen a noticeable difference after consistent use. I’ve been targeting a specific area of my face where there are several acne marks—after a week the area evened out quite a bit, and overall my face looked brighter."
Just so you know: Our experts say to avoid using retinol if you’re pregnant.
Courtesy of Fleur & Bee
If this isn't your first retinol rodeo and you’re looking for something a little more powerful, let us point you to Fleur & Bee. With its 0.1% concentration, this serum does wonders at targeting fine lines. Plus, it's packed with 21 other active ingredients (more on some of those below), each of which target things like hyperpigmentation and dehydration.
Bonus points, per the experts: It's also formulated with glycolic acid, a chemical exfoliant that's good for anyone with hyperpigmentation or oily, acne-prone skin; niacinamide, an antioxidant that evens skin tone and soothes redness; aloe, which calms and hydrates; and squalane, a moisturizing agent for dry skin.
One tester said: "I really did feel on my A-game using this product (pun intended). I have incredibly sensitive skin, so I need to be very careful when choosing a retinol. This one wasn't irritating or drying, and overall felt really gentle."
Just so you know: Like we said before, skip the retinol if you’re pregnant.
Courtesy of Covey
Perhaps your skin falls more on the irritable side—in which case, using retinol could result in unsavory side effects like redness or dryness. This alternative from Covey is formulated with bakuchiol, a gentle, vegan, pregnancy-safe option that comes highly recommended by derms.
Bonus points, per the experts: This serum also contains hardworking peptides, soothing niacinamide, and hydrating hyaluronic acid.

One tester said: "Sometimes retinol can be irritating for my sensitive skin, so I was eager to try this alternative. It has moisturizing properties, so not only did I not feel dry and irritated, but my skin actually felt smooth and hydrated the morning after."
Courtesy of BYROE New York
Like cutting off a toxic ex, sloughing off dirt and dead skin cells is a necessary part of your self-care routine. To get the job done, you’ll need a product that won't irritate your skin. Testers loved this resurfacing serum from Byroe; it uses chemical exfoliants and plants like celery and chicory root to gently polish. (And, for what it's worth, the bottle will look better on your bathroom counter than said ex's ratty toothbrush.)
Bonus points, per the experts: This one's formulated with acne-fighting salicylic acid, glycolic acid (another AHA), and niacinamide.
One tester said: "This serum isn't greasy—but it is hydrating—and didn't take long to absorb. The gentle exfoliation leaves my skin soft without any irritation to my extra sensitive skin."
Just so you know: Our experts say that salicylic acid may be too harsh for people with dry and sensitive skin.
Courtesy of TULA Skincare
While you’ve likely been told to use actives like AHAs and retinol at night, you might also consider swapping in a hydrating serum every once in a while (hello, skin cycling) to prevent dryness. Tula's impressed our testers with its packaging, texture, and how much bang you get for your buck.
Bonus points, per the experts: This product is formulated with squalane, which locks in moisture and is great for dry skin, and peptides, which increase collagen production and can help with fine lines.
One tester said: "It's super hydrating, and I love that it immediately soaks in. There's also a lot of product in the bottle, so I know it's going to last a long time."
Courtesy of OLEHENRIKSEN
Whether you use a facial oil every day, seasonally, or only when you remember to use your gua sha, you’ll want to pick an option that doesn't clog your pores. Testers said that this option from OleHenriksen felt weightless and didn't create a greasy sheen.
Bonus points, per the experts: It contains antiaging peptides, as well as ceramides, which are key for hydrating all skin types.
One tester said: "After massaging in this lightweight oil, my skin feels softer and instantly looks more alive. My face never got greasy, even after a long day of sweating through my commute. And it layers well under my SPF, which isn't always the case with oils. "
Just so you know: This product is made with fragrances, which can be irritating, especially for sensitive skin.

What makes this face oil different from our other winners? It's formulated with actives like bakuchiol and vitamin C—so not only does it seal in moisture, but it can also help treat other skin concerns, like fine lines and dark spots.

Bonus points, per the experts: Jojoba oil is lightweight and suitable for oily or acne-prone skin; bakuchiol targets hyperpigmentation and signs of aging; vitamin C is a brightening antioxidant; and squalane combats dryness.
One tester said: "My skin loves this oil. When I wake up after using it on my face and neck at night, everything looks a bit more plump, and definitely more hydrated. I’ve been using it in the daytime too, and love how I radiate from beneath my makeup—and how my foundation glides on without pilling."

So you just got paid and you want to ball out on some skin care that feels decidedly more luxe than your most recent empty? Go for this pick from Pietro Simone, which combines fragrant oils like marula and saffron to make your regimen a delightful sensory experience. One tester—who has sensitive, acne-prone, and dry skin—said they couldn't get enough of it.
Bonus points, per the experts: This product includes chamomile, a calming ingredient, as well as moisturizing glycerin.
One tester said: "I use it morning and night, for gua sha massages, to seal in my serums, or just as a hydrating moisturizer. My skin became noticeably softer and bouncier over time with it too. It's absolutely an oil I’d invest in again."
Courtesy of Humphreys
Travel-friendly and "I’m-too-tired-for-my-full-routine" skin care products are a necessity. These convenient cleansing pads from Humphrey's—which fall into both categories—impressed our testers with how effectively they removed makeup. No more waking up with mascara on your pillowcase.
Bonus points, per the experts: While the main ingredient here is witch hazel, these are also formulated with soothing aloe.
One tester said: "I really love this product. I always thought my makeup remover was effective, but when I tested it against this, the cleansing pads were the clear winner. They leave my skin feeling soft and smooth."

"Get you a girl who can do both," blah, blah, blah. Okay, but seriously—toners get a bad rap for being drying, but this two-in-one product saves the day with hyaluronic acid. We also love that it's efficient, cutting down on the overall cost of your routine and the time you spend on it.
Bonus points, per the experts: It's also formulated with hyaluronic acid, a lightweight hydrator for all skin types, and calming aloe.
One tester said: "I like that this toner-serum hybrid removes one of my skin care steps. It also delivers on all of its promises, leaving my face feeling clean, refreshed, hydrated, soothed, and smooth."
Courtesy of Fenty Skin
To Rih or not to Rih—is that even a question? After testing this double duty toner-essence from Fenty Skin, we can confidently say that we’re sticking with Rihanna. Its milky texture and hydrating formula make it an excellent product to have on lock when your skin needs a little extra TLC.

Bonus points, per the experts: It's made with hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and green tea extract, three ingredients that soothe redness and promote plump, dewy skin.
One tester said: "This has worked really, really well for me, as it nourishes and doesn't irritate. Honestly, I’d go buy it at the store tomorrow."
Just so you know: It also contains fragrances, which may upset sensitive skin.
Courtesy of True Botanicals
If you have DDDs—that is, dehydrated, dry, and dull skin—an essence like this one from True Botanicals can help polish and hydrate simultaneously. With ingredients like lime, papaya, and pineapple, it's basically a smoothie for your face.
Bonus points, per the experts: This product is formulated with soothing and moisturizing ingredients like aloe, green tea extract, and glycerin.
One tester said: "I absolutely loved this essence. I use it every day as a part of my routine now, and given that it's visibly and immediately hydrating, I feel that it saved my skin from my regular use of actives."
Courtesy of BioRepublic
Pro tip: Keep your fridge stocked with at least one sheet mask for any time you need a cooldown (physical or mental). Another pro tip: Make it this one from BioRepublic, which testers say is easy to put on and doesn't move around while you’re wearing it. It's packed with calming ingredients too.
Bonus points, per the experts: You’ll find soothing allantoin, calendula, and peptides in here, along with moisturizing squalane.
One tester said: "My perpetually dry skin loves this sheet mask. It stayed put without any issue—something many sheet masks can't do—and delivers on providing hydration, radiance, and reducing dullness."
Courtesy of Dr. Jart\+
Here's another impressive sheet mask if you have a little more wiggle room in your budget. This Dr.Jart+ pick is great for dry or dehydrated skin, and it's packed with soothing ingredients.
Bonus points, per the experts: Allantoin, panthenol, and ceramides all help to quell redness.
One tester said: "This is a powerful mask that gave me a boost of moisture in just 20 minutes. I’d highly recommend it for when you’re feeling parched and need some TLC."
Just so you know: This product contains dyes, which can be irritating for sensitive skin.
Courtesy of Fenty Skin
Another winner from Fenty Skin, this whipped clay mask looks good enough to eat. (But…please don't.) It's great as a once-in-a-while reset during a night of self-care, especially if you’re oily or acne-prone.
Bonus points, per the experts: This product contains salicylic acid, a hero zit-fighting ingredient, plus glycerin and shea butter to keep you moisturized.
One tester said: "OMG, I don't want any other charcoal mask on my face ever again! Beyond the chic and playful packaging, the goop itself feels luxurious. Immediately afterward my face felt so smooth and soft, and the results were still noticeable the next morning."
Courtesy of Drunk Elephant
Drunk Elephant has done it again, folks. This active-packed mask tackles multiple skin issues at once, making it a functional product that we can pretty much guarantee you’ll reach for again and again, whether you’re managing acne scars or an uneven skin tone.

Bonus points, per the experts: Azelaic acid is a gentle chemical exfoliant, salicylic acid works to clear up acne, niacinamide evens skin tone, and ceramides moisturize.
One tester said: "After using this mask a few times, I noticed a few spots fading and a general evenness to my complexion. If it keeps getting brighter with more continued use, then I’m well on my way to a new baby face."
Courtesy of Dr. Jart\+
This is the foolproof peel, perfect for newbies or anyone afraid of the somewhat daunting skin care category. It's surprisingly nourishing, with a lotion-like texture that one tester (who has sensitive skin) said felt soothing, not stinging.
Bonus points, per the experts: This product contains exfoliating AHAs like salicylic acid, lactic acid, and tartaric acids, plus soothing ingredients like chamomile, panthenol, and green tea.
One tester said: "I was reaaaally nervous that my sensitive skin was not going to like this, but after testing it, I was stunned by how gentle it was for something called a Multi-Acid Radiance Peel. I was expecting dryness, flaking, and redness, but instead, I just kept waking up with my skin looking a lot brighter and smoother than it did before I went to bed."
Just so you know: It's formulated with fragrances, which may be irritating for some folks.

Here's a travel-friendly skin care staple to keep in your bag at all times: Hero Cosmetic's Pimple Correct Pen dispenses AHA- and BHA-based gel on the spot (heh) to help prevent your underground pimple from flaring up or sticking around for a week. One tester confirmed that it also wears well under makeup and during general daytime use.
Bonus points, per the experts: This product uses acne-fighting salicylic acid, plus lactic and azelaic acids, which are chemical exfoliants that slough away dead skin cells and brighten dark spots.
One tester said: "The applicator pen makes it really easy to dispense the gel—which itself is very effective. I would definitely recommend this to anyone that deals with occasional breakouts and mild acne."
Courtesy of Peace Out Skincare
If you’re someone who likes to keep your pimples covered and concealed, try these ultrathin patches from Peace Out Skincare. Beyond creating a barrier to keep you from picking and popping, they’re infused with active ingredients that might just shrink your zit faster. Testers recommend slapping one on as soon as you notice a pimple coming up.
Bonus points, per the experts: These dots are formulated with salicylic acid, retinol, and soothing aloe.
One tester said: "Out of all of the acne patches I’ve tried, these are some of the best! They’re thinner than others on the market, which makes them more comfortable to wear all day (or night, if you prefer to sleep with a patch on)."
